When a burst sewage pipe contaminates the drinking water of thousands of Tshwane residents, it is not merely a technical fault – it is a clear sign of negligence and poor maintenance.

The Tshwane Metro has warned residents in Pretoria Central and surrounding areas to boil tap water thoroughly after a burst sewage pipe contaminated the water supply system at the Findlay Reservoir.

The contamination was confirmed on 21 October 2026. The affected areas include Arcadia, Sunnyside, Pretoria Central, Marabastad, the Asiatic Bazaar, Belle Ombre and Trevenna.

The Metro has since emptied the Findlay Reservoir and switched to an alternative source, but the incident itself raises serious questions:

How is it possible for sewage to end up in the drinking water system, and had there been adequate monitoring and maintenance of critical infrastructure?

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) warned of the risk of water pollution in Tshwane on several occasions.

This incident confirms that those warnings were ignored.

The party, therefore, demands:

  • an urgent and thorough investigation into the cause of the burst sewage pipe and the contamination;
  • clarity on whether adequate precautionary measures and monitoring systems were in place;
  • regular, independent water quality tests and public disclosure of the results;
  • a reliable supply of safe drinking water to all affected communities; and
  • that the officials and political leaders responsible for water and sanitation services be held accountable.

Residents’ health should never be jeopardised by negligence or poor management. The Tshwane Metro now needs to take transparent steps to ensure that something like this does not happen again.

Freedom Front Plus Education: The FF Plus calls for quality education and the protection of language rights in schools.
