After the indulgence of the festive season, many want to start the New Year with healthy eating habits. While some turn to strict eating plans, there may be a simpler way. Veganuary is a trend that originated in the UK, which challenges participants to avoid animal products for January to fully appreciate a plant-based diet. This more holistic approach to healthy eating may be just the thing for people looking to detox and start 2026 on the right foot.

“Veganuary isn’t about cutting out meat forever,” says Candice Sessions, Laager Rooibos Marketing Manager. “It’s a fantastic way to try new flavours through creative meals, while discovering how plant-based eating can support both your health and the environment. Adding Laager Rooibos to your recipes enhances the flavour, while giving your body a natural boost.”

The team from Laager Rooibos has shared insight and tips on this month-long dietary challenge, helping South Africans explore plant-based eating with delicious Laager-infused veggie recipes.

What are the benefits of Veganuary?

There are many associated health benefits of Veganuary, including:

1. Heart Health
Plant-based diets are naturally lower in cholesterol and saturated fats, helping to support healthy blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. Laager Rooibos provides additional support for heart health due to its high antioxidant content. It’s also the only rooibos tea endorsed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa (HSFSA).

2. Stable Blood Sugar & Diabetes Risk
Vegan diets rich in fibre and whole foods improve insulin sensitivity and help maintain steady blood sugar levels. This, too, is supported by Laager Rooibos, which may help support healthy blood sugar levels through its antioxidant properties.

3. Weight Management
Reducing processed and animal-based foods in a diet often results in lower caloric intake while improving nutrient density. This is supported by Laager Rooibos, which has almost zero caloric intake.

4. Digestive Health
High-fibre fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains act as prebiotics and support gut health. The anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic properties of Laager Rooibos, alongside its prebiotic potential, will further enhance digestive health.

5. Environmental Impact
Eating more plant-based meals can reduce your carbon footprint, conserve water, and support sustainable agriculture. The sustainably-focused Laager Rooibos teabags can also be repurposed for composting, skincare, firelighters, and more, making them environmentally beneficial.

Laager Rooibos-Infused Recipes to Try This Veganuary

Laager Rooibos provides natural versatility to enhance plant-based meals, from sweet to savoury. To get started, Laager Rooibos brand ambassadors and renowned chefs, Lebo and Tebo Ndala (@withlovefromthetwins) have shared two great recipes to try.

Laager Rooibos Spice Rub Corn Ribs

Ingredients:
• 1 tbsp chilli flakes
• 1 tbsp coriander
• 1 Laager Pure Rooibos teabag (loose leaves)
• 3 tbsp butter
• Zest of 1 lemon
• 3 ears of corn
• Salt & pepper
• 1 spring onion, thinly sliced
• Cream cheese, to serve
• 2 tbsp toasted pine nuts
• Lime wedges, to garnish
Method:

1. Mix butter, chilli, coriander, tea leaves, zest, salt, and pepper.
2. Cut corn into halves, then halves again lengthwise.
3. Brush corn with seasoned butter and cook in an air-fryer (15–20 mins) or oven at 180°C (30–35 mins) until golden.
4. Serve with cream cheese, sprinkle with spring onion and pine nuts, and drizzle lime juice.

Laager Rooibos Chilli & Rooibos Honey Roasted Butternut

Ingredients:
• 2 baby or medium butternut halved lengthways
• ½ tsp cayenne pepper
• ½ tsp chilli pepper
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• Salt & pepper
• 2 Laager Pure Rooibos teabags
• ½ cup water
• ¾ cup castor sugar
• Fresh parsley to garnish
• Lime wedges, to serve
Method:

1. To make Laager Rooibos honey: In a saucepan, boil the teabags and sugar in water until all the sugar dissolves and the liquid is halved. Set aside to cool and slightly thicken. Discard teabags.

2. Pre-heat oven to 200°C.

3. Lay the halved butternuts on a prepared baking tray. Score the butternuts with a knife lengthways and sideways to make blocks (don’t slice all the way through).

4. Drizzle olive oil onto the butternut. Season with the peppers and paprika, and drizzle the Laager Rooibos honey on top

5. Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes / until cooked all the way through.
