The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has today announced the establishment of its new Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Advisory Group, a key milestone in delivering the ‘Crys I Bawb’ EDI Strategy and strengthening the organisation’s commitment to representing and reflecting the diverse communities of Wales.
Created following close work with the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), the Advisory Group will formally report into the WRU People, Culture and Governance Committee, providing independent expertise, strategic guidance and robust oversight across all EDI activity and has been created to support the WRU in its ambition to ensure rugby truly reflects the diverse spirit of One Wales.
Liam Scott, WRU Head of EDI, says, “We are delighted to announce the creation of our EDI Advisory Group at the WRU. It is a significant step forward in delivering our ‘Crys I Bawb’ Strategy and embedding equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of Welsh rugby.
“The insight provided by this group will be essential as we continue to deepen our community connections; promoting and strengthening EDI standards from community clubs through to the elite game, the Group will play a vital role in helping ensure rugby in Wales is welcoming, inclusive and representative of everyone who loves the sport.
The inaugural Advisory Group brings together a diverse group of experts and community voices:
- Zoiey Smale (Chair)
- Dean Pymble (Vice Chair)
- Laylla Stanley
- Ali Arshad
- Bethan Howell
- Jalal Goni
Zoiey Smale, Chair of the WRU EDI Advisory Board adds, “Sport is strongest when it reflects the people it serves. Rugby has long been part of the fabric of Welsh communities and our role as advisors to the WRU is to support the game in deepening understanding around the diversity that sits within that.
“Inclusion is not an add-on to rugby, it is fundamental to the future of the sport. The breadth of knowledge and experience within this EDI advisory group creates a real opportunity to bring more voices into the conversation and help shape meaningful progress. It is an honour to be part of this work and build on what is already being done in this space.”
