Zambian Student With Eight Distinctions Seeks Final Funding Bridge for Beihang Engineering Place

NDOLA, ZAMBIA – A Zambian student from Ndola who achieved Grade One distinctions in all eight subjects on his 2024 School Certificate has secured admission to Beihang University in Beijing, China, to study Mechanical Engineering, but a remaining funding gap could affect his ability to take up the place.

Mordecai Simumba is expected to begin undergraduate Mechanical Engineering studies at Beihang University in September 2026. His study documentation records Beihang University as the host institution, with the undergraduate programme running from September 2026 to July 2030. His registration deadline is 30 September 2026.

Simumba’s family has already secured approximately ZAR 87,000 toward his initial study costs. He is now seeking approximately ZMW 30,000 in additional bridge support for accommodation, travel-related settlement and essential costs associated with establishing himself in China.

The request is not intended to finance the entire four-year degree. Full or partial contributions may be combined to close the remaining immediate funding gap, while sponsors who prefer not to transfer money directly may consider paying an agreed verified study-related expense.

Simumba completed the 2024 Examinations Council of Zambia School Certificate with Grade One distinctions in English Language, Civic Education, Geography, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

His academic preparation for undergraduate study also includes scores of 70 out of 100 in Mathematics and 70 out of 100 in Physics on the CSCA score report, together with an IELTS Academic overall band score of 7.0.

His interest in engineering developed through school science and technology activities.

At Kansenshi Secondary School, Simumba served as president of the Junior Engineers, Technicians and Scientists Club. A school recommendation records his participation in JETS from Grade 10 to Grade 12, involvement in a Smart Agricultural System project and organisation of the school’s first science fair while serving as JETS president.

He was also recognised through Zambia National STEM Foundation/STEM activities as a Regional Executive Coordinator and received a Kansenshi Alumni Award recognising academic excellence in 2024.

Simumba says his interest in Mechanical Engineering is linked to Zambia’s longer-term need for stronger manufacturing, automation, agricultural mechanisation and local technical capability.

“My aim is to gain practical engineering knowledge that can eventually be applied to productive industry in Zambia,” Simumba said. “My family has already carried the greater part of the immediate financial responsibility. The remaining challenge is to close the final gap so that an admission on paper becomes actual attendance.”

The funding challenge comes only weeks before preparations for the September intake must be completed.

Prospective sponsors do not need to fund the full amount. The sponsorship structure allows for contributions of ZMW 5,000, ZMW 10,000, ZMW 15,000 or another amount, with several contributions capable of being combined toward the ZMW 30,000 target.

Simumba has prepared a supporting sponsorship package containing his academic profile, funding requirements and verification arrangements.

Original supporting documentation available for verification includes his JW202 Confirmation Form for Study in China, ECZ School Certificate and results, CSCA score report, IELTS Academic report, achievement certificates, school recommendation letters, resume and statement of purpose.

Sponsors may also request reasonable evidence of supported study-related expenses and confirmation of enrolment after registration.

Simumba is currently approaching education organisations, engineering and mining companies, Zambia-China organisations, professional bodies, alumni networks, media organisations and individual benefactors in Zambia and internationally.

The case highlights a common challenge for academically successful students who secure international university admission but still face a final financial barrier between admission and enrolment.
