And that’s a wrap for Classic Car Friday! The final, all-or-nothing Top 10 Shootout started with only nine cars as Ian Schofield’s March 77B was retired due to the gearbox troubles encountered earlier in the day.
Craig Wessels was up next in 1983 Porsche 911 RSR IROC and posted his second-quickest official time of the day of 51.179 seconds, a mere 0.06 sec off his Class Finals result, and he was rewarded with eighth overall.
Josh Dovey was up next in the 1973 Chevron B20 F3 and he went wide through the Esses, resulting in the car spinning out on the dirty line and ultimately stopping up against the banking – fortunately without any major damage.
Antony Rix powered the 1969 Lola T70 Mk3B to a time of 50.586 seconds – about 1.2 seconds slower than his Class Finals run, which placed him seventh. Andre Bezuidenhout’s hopes of defending his Classic Conqueror title evaporated when it counted after the 1976 Lola T460 got stuck in third gear after Turn 3, and he completed his run in sixth place – more than 8 seconds off his Class Finals pace.
Robert Wolk completed the 1.9km run fifth with a time of 48.288 seconds in the 1979 Van Diemen RF Formula Ford, while James Temple muscled the 1965 Shelby Daytona Coupe to a time of 47.190 seconds to secure fourth place.
Rui Campos romped to third place overall, impressively placing the tin-top 1974 Porsche 911 RSR in amongst the single-seaters and sports cars on the podium with his best time of the day of 46.730 seconds – despite the car’s engine performing unpredictably in the shootout.
2015 Classic Conqueror, Charles Arton, ended runner-up in the 1979 March 79A after going almost a second quicker than his Class Finals time on 43.586 sec.
However, it was Franco Scribante’s moment to shine in the 1970 Chevron B19 as he returned to the top step of the Classic Car Friday podium with a time of 41.937 seconds, even after a less than perfect pull-off from the start line. This handed Scribante his seventh Classic Conqueror title.
Farouk Dangor was honoured with the Spirit of Dave Charlton Award for Classic Car Friday for his professionalism, dedication and commitment to motorsport.
