New performance data compiled by Nielsen Sports SA confirms a defining year for premium local sports content, with flagship productions GIANTS and SuperSport MVP Talent Search delivering record audiences, strong repeat engagement, and broad national reach across linear television.

In a year marked by intensified content competition, premium South African sports storytelling proved its ability to cut through. Long-form documentary depth and aspirational talent-led entertainment formats both resonated strongly with viewers, reinforcing the growing appetite for authentic African sports narratives.

Together, these two properties highlight a breakthrough year in which local sports content delivered both scale and loyalty.

GIANTS Sets the Benchmark for Sports Documentary Storytelling

The first season of the five-part GIANTS docuseries, chronicling the lives and careers of Orlando Pirates players, emerged as one of the standout sports documentary successes of 2025.

Across 85 broadcasts, the series reached more than 1.5 million unique viewers, generating over 192 million minutes of total viewing. Strong repeat exposure reflected deep audience engagement, with viewers returning multiple times to connect with the series’ emotional, behind-the-scenes storytelling.

The performance reinforced the enduring demand for premium, locally produced documentary content that transforms sporting icons into cultural narratives and strengthens fan loyalty.

SuperSport MVP Talent Search Expands Reach and Broadens Audiences

Complementing the success of GIANTS Season 1, the inaugural edition of the SuperSport MVP Talent Search demonstrated the power of sports entertainment formats to expand audience reach and attract new viewer segments. According to Nielsen Sports SA Linear TV data (BRC TAMS 2025):

  • 2,283,642 total unique viewers were reached across premier and repeat broadcasts.
  • The series delivered over 2 million hours of total consumption (2,057,609 hours).
  • 643,396 viewers (28%) watched the show at least twice, demonstrating strong repeat engagement.
  • Entertainment channel distribution accounted for 75% of total viewership delivery, significantly amplifying reach.

The format also attracted a younger and more female-skewed audience profile, broadening the overall sports content footprint and reinforcing the versatility of premium local sports programming.

A Defining Year for Premium Local Sports Content

The combined performance of GIANTS and SuperSport MVP Talent Search reflects a broader 2025 trend: South African audiences are actively choosing high-quality, locally produced sports narratives.

Strong, unique reach, meaningful repeat exposure, and substantial total hours consumed confirm that this category is no longer niche; it is mainstream, scalable, and growing. The results demonstrate that premium local sports storytelling can deliver both emotional connection and measurable commercial value.

Rendani Ramovha, CANAL+ Director for Sports Content in English and Portuguese-speaking Africa, says:
“SuperSport had a breakthrough year in 2025 as far as local sport storytelling is concerned. The data from our newest documentary and reality series, GIANTS and MVP Talent Search, respectively, shows that the business has moved in the right direction in terms of giving viewers – not only sports fans – the type of entertainment they desire. GIANTS and MVP Talent Search were breakthrough shows that showed the possibilities that lie in wait when we collaborate with the right partners – both commercial and sporting.”

Nwabisa Sauls, Senior Commercial Manager at Nielsen Sports SA, comments:
“The 2025 performance data highlights a clear shift in audience behaviour. Premium African sports storytelling is resonating at scale, whether through documentary depth or aspirational talent formats. The strength of reach, repeat viewing, and cross-channel amplification confirms that there is a sustained appetite for this content category and meaningful return for investment in local production.”
