Johannesburg – Hyundai Automotive South Africa proudly celebrates a significant milestone: 800,000 vehicles sold in the South African market since its debut 25 years ago.
From humble beginnings as a relatively unknown brand in a market long dominated by established global motoring giants, Hyundai has grown into one of South Africa’s most successful and recognizable automotive brands.
“Reaching 800,000 vehicles sold is a reflection of how much South Africans love the Hyundai brand,” said Stanley Anderson, CEO of Hyundai Automotive South Africa. “We entered the market with a clear vision: to offer vehicles that combine quality, reliability and value for money, supported by exceptional aftersales service. Today’s milestone confirms that this vision resonates strongly with our customers.”
Hyundai Automotive South Africa has also been an industry trailblazer, becoming the first automotive brand in the country to introduce a 7-year/200,000 km warranty. This bold move set a new standard for customer confidence and reliability, compelling other manufacturers to follow suit. The brand’s nationwide presence is equally impressive, with 97 dealerships across South Africa, 44 of which are owned directly by Hyundai.
The fourth largest motoring brand continues to make a significant contribution to South Africa’s economy by directly employing 2,500 employees translating into supporting 12,500 livelihoods. Beyond direct employment, Hyundai Automotive South Africa invested R75 million in bursaries for employees and their families, built 23 community libraries and provides workplace experience to 183 youth learners, annually.
Ockert Janse van Rensburg, CEO of Motus Holdings Limited, the distributor of Hyundai vehicles in South Africa, congratulated the Hyundai team and emphasized that this achievement carries significance beyond the brand itself.

The 800,000 sales mark, represents both a significant achievement as well as ushering the next phase of Hyundai’s growth in South Africa. “Our positive impact in South Africa is far from over,” said Anderson. “We remain committed to delivering high-quality vehicles and a customer experience that continues to earn the loyalty of motorists across the country.”

Richard Maponya studied to be a teacher but couldn\’t find work, so he became a stock taker at a clothing manufacturer. His manager sold him soiled clothing and offcuts, which he resold. He made enough capital to open a clothing retailer. In the early 1950\’s Maponya and his wife established the Dube Hygienic Dairy, which delivered milk to customers daily. By the 1970\’s his clothing empire had grown enough for him to branch into other areas, including: general stores, car dealerships and filling stations. In 2007, Maponya Mall in Soweto was opened, one of the largest shopping centres in the country. He continued to focus on Soweto\’s growth by establishing Maponya Motor City, which included a Volkswagen and Toyota dealership.
