The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) warned the Mayoral Committee Member for Public Safety in the Mogale City Local Municipality (Krugersdorp, Magaliesburg, Muldersdrift), Francis Makgatho, that more accidents in Krugersdorp are inevitable if proper road markings and traffic signs are not put up immediately.

This week alone, two car accidents occurred in the Monument neighbourhood due to inadequate and faded traffic signs and road markings in Jacob Maree and Paul Kruger Streets.

Yesterday morning (Tuesday), a pregnant woman and her daughter were injured in a collision that could have been prevented with clear traffic signs and visible road markings.

The problem affects the entire Krugersdorp. Stop signs are frequently stolen and not replaced, road markings are faded or absent, and intersections lack essential signage.

The Freedom Front Plus specifically requested that traffic signs be put up in Bell Street, in front of Hoërskool Noordheuwel. This street carries heavy traffic during morning and afternoon peak hours, and the absence of stop signs – which were stolen – causes chaos.

The Municipality’s neglect directly endangers road users.

The Municipality has a constitutional and moral responsibility to ensure that traffic signs are clearly visible, road surfaces are properly marked and stolen signs are promptly replaced.

Basic road safety is not a luxury – it is a necessity.
