ActionSA in the North West Province is gravely concerned that conditions at Dikeledi Makapan Primary School, built in 1978 and located in the Moretele Local Municipality, have deteriorated further since our initial oversight visit on 18 February 2026.
On 8 March 2026, ActionSA MPL, Hon. Masego Kodisang, conducted a follow-up oversight visit. She found that learners and educators are still exposed to serious safety risks. The school has cracked walls, broken tiles, collapsing ceilings, and shattered windows. This shows clear neglect and a complete failure to maintain the infrastructure. Putting the lives of learners at risk.
Equally concerning is the situation at Rantebeng II Primary School within the same municipality. The school has been without a sustainable electricity solution since 2021, after its three-phase transformer became unaffordable, costing the school over R5,000 per month. This has led to debt exceeding R100,000 and the eventual disconnection of services.
Despite formally requesting intervention from both the Department of Education and local leadership, the school and its governing body says they have received no assistance to date. Learners are now subjected to an environment that undermines teaching and learning due to the lack of basic services.
These two cases expose a systemic failure by the North West Department of Education to fulfil its constitutional obligations. The right to education is not only a constitutional obligation, but also a fundamental human right, and a cornerstone of equality.
ActionSA will formally write to the MEC for Education to demand urgent intervention in both cases. This will include clear timelines, accountability measures, and immediate remedial action. We will further intensify our legislative oversight to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The continued neglect of schools in Moretele is a direct violation of learners’ rights to safe, dignified, and quality education. Government cannot continue to ignore these failures while the futures of our children hang in the balance.
