Recommendation to Appoint LT. Gen. Mkhwanazi as National Head of the Hawks

30 October 2026 by Guest

The post ActionSA Welcomes Recommendation to Appoint Lt. Gen. Mkhwanazi as National Head of the Hawks appeared first on ActionSA.

ActionSA welcomes and supports the recommendation by Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia to appoint Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as the National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks.

This recommendation comes after months of investigations, commissions, parliamentary committees and mounting public pressure over the alleged infiltration of the South African Police Service (SAPS) by criminal elements operating within its ranks.

In July 2025, Lt. Gen. Mkhwanazi brought these concerns into the national spotlight, exposing serious allegations of criminality, corruption and interference within the police service. His revelations intensified demands for accountability, with subsequent investigations contributing to the arrests, suspensions and dismissals of several senior police officials. While these are important steps, far more is needed to restore public trust in our law enforcement institutions.

ActionSA believes that recommending Lt. Gen. Mkhwanazi to lead the Hawks signals a potentially important shift towards stronger leadership and a more decisive approach to fighting organised crime and corruption within the state.

This change in leadership is complimented by ActionSA’s Scorpions 2.0 Bills, which will further capacitate, reform and enhance the Hawks giving it the funding, powers and independence to crush organised crime and corruption. ActionSA has declared Corruption Public Enemy number one and will support all efforts to restore public trust in our corruption fighting entities.

ActionSA Herman Mashaba (President) Before politics, he founded Black Like Me in 1985, a household hair-care brand in South Africa. Served as the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg (2016–2019) under a DA-led coalition. Resigned from both the Mayoralty and the DA in 2019, citing a lack of support for pro-poor service delivery and policy differences, leading directly to the birth of ActionSA.
