The Spatial Development Framework is a crucial tool for addressing key challenges in the Garden Route District Municipality. I’d like to highlight two critical areas that require attention.
Public transport is a pressing concern.
We need an integrated network of buses and rail that serves our people effectively. With the district expected to grow to over 1 million people in the next few years, we must prioritise building strong relationships with national, provincial, and local governments to create a reliable and integrated transport system. A one-system, one-ticket approach will save communities time and money, enabling them to access work and other opportunities more easily.
Secondly, housingis a significant issue, with a substantial backlog and many residents living on the outskirts of towns. The Good Party is concerned about the increasing number of backyard dwellers, particularly in coastal towns. Public land should be utilised for housing opportunities closer to workplaces and central business areas.
Access to basic services like clean water, electricity, and proper roads is a fundamental human right, essential for human dignity.
Economic Development:
The Garden Route District has immense potential for growth, particularly in tourism. We must ensure sustainable growth, promote local entrepreneurship, and support small businesses.
These areas require attention to ensure a prosperous and equitable future for the Garden Route District.
The Spatial Development Framework (SDF) for the Garden Route District should prioritise environmental sustainability, focusing on:
- Climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies
- Protection of biodiversity and natural resources (water, land, air)
- Sustainable waste management and reduction of pollution
- Promotion of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency
- Sustainable land use planning and management
- Disaster risk management and resilience building
Key considerations:
- Coastal erosion and sea-level rise impact on infrastructure and settlements
- Water scarcity and management in a water-stressed region
- Balancing economic growth with environmental conservation
- Ensuring community involvement in environmental decision-making
By addressing these environmental concerns, the SDF can ensure a sustainable and resilient future for the Garden Route District.
