John Nicholas, NSRI Port Edward station commander, said: At 15h45, Sunday, 25 January, NSRI Port Edward duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at Casino Lagoon, Wild Coast Sun, Port Edward.
Eyewitnesses had reported seeing an unidentified man disappear under water in the lagoon after appearing to get into distress in the water while swimming.
NSRI rescue swimmers, our NSRI rescue craft JetRIB, KZN Government Health EMS, KwaZulu Private ambulance services, the SA Police Services and Police K9 Search and Rescue responded and joined Wild Coast Sun lifeguards and Wild Coast Sun emergency response on the scene where lifeguards had located and recovered the man from underwater.
Paramedics sadly declared the man deceased.
The body of the man was taken into the care of Police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
Police have opened an Inquest docket.
Condolences are conveyed to family and friends of the deceased man.
