Airports Crisis: PAIA Application Submitted

Today the Democratic Alliance has submitted two PAIA applications to the Department of Transport and the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) to ensure transparency and accountability for the airport’s crisis. The Minister and the ACSA board must account to South Africa for their failures.

Airports in South Africa are faced with multiple of issues, including systemic failures in air traffic safety, failing infrastructure at airports, mismanagement and fuel supply issues. South Africa cannot afford to have its aviation sector, a critical driver of our economy, hijacked by this level of mismanagement.

Yet the Minister and ACSA remain silent, avoiding their responsibility to remain accountable and transparent. For example, the Minister has failed to disclose a report into the failures of the Air Traffic Navigations Services.

To ensure accountability and transparency, the DA submitted two PAIA applications, one to obtain the independent report into the failures of the Air Traffic Navigations Services, which she has been in possession of privately for almost two months, and secondly, to access the minutes of Minister Creecy’s meetings with the Board of the Airports Company South Africa.

Safe and reliable air travel is vital – credibility must be restored through transparency and accountability. Minister Creecy cannot continue pleading ignorance while the aviation sector descends into chaos.
