The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) played a part in preventing the Ekurhuleni Metro Council from writing off R145 million spent on incomplete projects between 2010 and 2015.
The Freedom Front Plus joined hands with other opposition parties in voting against the write-off. The matter was consequently remitted to the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) for further investigation.
A significant amount may not be written off without first exhausting all possible avenues of collection.
A rash write-off sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the principle of financial discipline in the Municipality.
Before any public funds can be written off, the Metro has to prove that:
- comprehensive recovery efforts were made; and
- where misconduct is suspected, criminal charges and disciplinary steps were duly instituted.
Municipal funds are taxpayers’ money. Ekurhuleni residents deserve absolute transparency and accountability when it comes to how their money is managed and spent.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep opposing irresponsible financial decisions and always safeguard the interests of Ekurhuleni’s residents and taxpayers.
