Blyde Chalet Development in Graskop Halted

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) welcomes confirmation that the Thaba Chweu Local Municipality has taken formal steps to halt the unlawful development at Blyde Chalet in Louis Trichardt Street, Graskop.

These steps follow unrelenting pressure from the Freedom Front Plus in addition to complaints from residents and nearby businesses about the serious failure to comply with building and safety regulations.

Issues included:

• Violations of building regulations and development requirements
• Absence of safety signage and inadequate safety measures on site
• Uncontrolled public access and workers operating without protective equipment
• Uncertainty regarding approved building plans and the impact on neighbouring businesses
• Failure to follow a proper public participation process

The risks became apparent in December 2025 already when building materials were blown onto neighbouring properties during storms.

The location – near established tourism enterprises and a facility accommodating large school groups – makes strict adherence to safety standards essential.

Municipal officials have confirmed that a formal stop work notice was issued on 21 April 2026 after the developer failed to produce the required documentation.

A contravention notice now affords the developer 21 days to respond before further legal action is pursued.

The site will be monitored to ensure compliance, and the Municipality has indicated that it will remain closed until all outstanding documentation has been submitted.

The party wishes to emphasise that proactive law enforcement is essential to prevent unlawful developments from escalating to this point.

Compliance with planning procedures and municipal regulations is non-negotiable for public safety and for safeguarding Graskop’s reputation as a tourism destination.

The Freedom Front Plus will closely monitor the situation to ensure that the Municipality consistently enforces the relevant regulations, and that administrative justice and public safety are upheld.
