Businesses and households advised to check credibility of solar installers

The Electrical Contractors’ Association of South Africa (ECA SA) is warning households and businesses to scrutinise the qualifications of solar system installers.

This, as demand for solar systems has risen rapidly in recent years, attracting a flood of solar system installation professionals, some genuine, while others are rogue.

The ECA has also labelled the Green Card as fiction in terms of its ability to properly inform customers of whether installers are qualified to install a solar system or not. The sponsors of the Green Card, the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association, say the Card genuinely reflects solar installers’ credibility to do a holistic job for clients.

The ECA SA’s National Director, Mark Mfikoe says that an electrical contractor must be registered with the Department of Labour and only Installation or Master Electricians may install Solar and that the Green Card is a “fiction”.

To verify the authenticity of any electrical contractor’s letter of registration, or lodge an electrical complaint, members of the public can contact the Department of Employment and Labour at 051 505 6371/6200.

If the electrician is a member of the ECA then complaints can be directed to the ECA on (011) 392 0000.
