I write to you as a resident and ratepayer of Cape Town. As a privileged South African, I live in a leafy suburb with wonderful service delivery. For goodness’ sake, last week there was planned maintenance done on a water pipe in my street and despite the notification of an interruption in service, my water flowed freely and the work was done in mere hours.
But, there are other Capetonians who do not share my privilege, despite also paying their rates. They live far from economic opportunities, spending over a third of their salaries just to get to work. They are crying out for affordable housing inside the city bowl, or in the surrounding suburbs.

City of Cape Town progresses with plans for permanent desalination plant: In the face of climate change, unpredictable rainfall and a growing population, the City’s plans for a permanent desalination plant is a key project in the City’s New Water Programme (NWP) and Water Strategy, which aims to diversify drinking water supply resources.
The desalination project is expected to produce 50 to 70-million litres of water a day by 2030.
Overall, the City aims to add an extra 300-million litres of water per day from various sources, including desalination, water reuse, groundwater and clearing of alien invasive species.

Armed robbers flee empty-handed after shooting man in chest: Four suspects fled the scene after attempting to rob a man of a black bag in Pinelands, Cape Town.
Families and shoppers fled for cover after a group of men fired shots at an outdoor parking lot at the Howard Centre in Pinelands, Cape Town, on Monday afternoon.
Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie said a 62-year-old man, a Chinese national, was attacked near the library, which is situated inside the centre, at around 15:15.

These Cape Town areas will be affected by water disruptions: Mayoral committee member for water and sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien said residents in the affected areas are encouraged to take note of the work that will take place and prepare accordingly.

Portuguese OPV arrives in Cape Town: Saturday 12 October saw another naval visit to the Port of Cape Town, this time from the Portuguese Navy Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) NRP Viana do Castelo.
The Viana do Castelo left Lisbon in August and is making its way around Africa, having previously visited Namibia, in September, and Mozambique, at the beginning of October. The vessel is slated to make its next stop in Angola, before participating in the Grand African Nemo exercise in the Gulf of Guinea.

Excitement Builds for U.S. Masters Athletes at Upcoming WMH World Cup: The 2024 World Masters Hockey (WMH) World Cup Cape Town begins tomorrow in Cape Town, South Africa. Four U.S. Masters teams will play against teams from all over the world in an atmosphere of competition and camaraderie.

Massive Land And Housing Justice Victory On Cape Town Golf Course Land:
Counterfeit sports goods worth R2.5m seized: A truckload of counterfeit sports goods, including branded socks, worth an estimated R2.5m has been seized by police in Cape Town.
The goods were discovered during an integrated operation by the provincial counterfeit and illicit goods policing team and the anti-economic crime task team on Sunday at Stikland, an industrial area in Bellville.
“The integrated operation kicked off at about 9am in Brug Street when they descended on an identified premises [and] where they found a Scania truck. The members searched the suspicious truck and found 22 bags containing well-known branded sporting socks,” said police spokesperson W/O Joseph Swartbooi.

Road closures for Cape Town Sanlam Marathon: Runners from across South Africa and abroad will descend on the Mother City for this weekend’s Cape Town Sanlam Marathon.
The marathon will be run on Sunday, 20 October but the event will also see a 5km and 10km Peace Run and trail runs on Saturday, 19 October.
Several road closures will affect various parts of the CBD over the weekend.
Parking restrictions will also be in place as the Cape Town Sanlam Marathon adheres to the requirements needed to become an Abbott World Marathon Majors event. Trains on track in Cape Town: Metrorail in the Western Cape says it’s on track to reopen all 124 stations in Cape Town by Christmas.
Only seven stations remain closed for construction, including ones in Khayelitsha and Mitchell’s Plain.

Cape Town motorist arrested for owing nearly R200,000 in fines: A Cape Town motorist with outstanding traffic fines of nearly R200,000 was arrested during an operation in the Mitchells Plain area last week and was unable to pay R18,000 bail.
He was joined behind bars in the past week by 285 suspects arrested during general operations by Cape Town’s enforcement agencies, said MMC for safety and security JP Smith.
Two motorists on the top 100 list of offenders were arrested during the operation on October 3 and had 87 warrants between them valued at R270,100, said Smith. A week earlier, two others were arrested with 43 combined warrants valued at R226,550.
