Clampdown on Dodgy Contractors

27 October 2026 by Guest

Statement by Wendy Alexander MP – DA Deputy Spokesperson on Finance:

The Democratic Alliance (DA) backs and supports Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson’s efforts to root out dishonest contractors and strengthen accountability in the construction industry.

This month, the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) removed a further 15 contractors from the National Register of Contractors after finding that they had misrepresented information in their applications to upgrade their contractor grading designations.

This brings the total to 75 contractors removed in just over two years under Minister Macpherson, compared with only one reportedly blacklisted during 22 years of ANC administration. This is a stark contrast in the action taken against contractors who misrepresent information, engage in fraudulent practices or fail to meet the standards required to do business with the state.

These measures are aimed at ensuring that contractors entrusted with public infrastructure projects meet the required standards, fulfil their contractual obligations and face consequences when they fail to do so.

The DA will continue to support measures that strengthen oversight, combat corruption and ensure that those entrusted with public funds are held to the highest standards of accountability.

Gogga – bug [ch-o-cha] The ‘g’ is pronounced as ‘ch’ in the back of the throat (think Scottish “Loch”) and is used to describe a bug or insect.

Botswana: You have two cows. But that\’s not surprising because you have pretty much every type of non-extinct mammal in your country.
