[Listen to Ian Cameron MP – DA Spokesperson on Police on this]
Dear Editor
Amidst a surge in gun violence that has plagued the country, the DA is delighted that the overdue crime statistics will finally be released next month.
Over two months ago, former Minister of Police Bheki Cele failed to release the crime statistics despite a public announcement by the South African Police Service (SAPS) that the statistics would be available at noon on May 17, 2024. Even after DA Police Shadow Minister at the time, Andrew Whitfield MP submitted a Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) request to address Cele’s refusal to release the data before the elections, the information remained elusive.
South Africa has been deeply affected by rampant crime and lawlessness, with families torn apart and communities in turmoil. Just yesterday, a teacher in KwaZulu-Natal was tragically killed in front of her students, and over the weekend, mass shootings in KwaZulu-Natal, North West, and Western Cape resulted in at least 20 murders—a grim reminder of the rising trend in mass killings.
The South African public will get the picture of the real state of affairs and insight into SAPS’ measures to combat crime and lawlessness.

A baby was born in South Africa. The village was very poor, and the makeshift hospital didn\’t have some necessary equipment.. such as scales.
The father however, was desperate to know the newborn baby\’s weight. After quite a bit of asking around, the hospital\’s chairman came up with an idea.
\”Five miles west, there\’s a butcher shop. The owner deals with meat, he should have a rather precise scale. You could just put your baby on the meat scale, and the weight reading you\’ll get should be pretty accurate.\”
And so the father departed westward. After much walking, with his newborn child cardled safely in his arms, he finally arrived at the butcher shop. He explained his dilemma to the shop owner, to witch the latter replied:
\”Don\’t worry, friend. It\’s not even a problem, I\’ll check it for you, free of charge.\” And so he took the child to the back, where the scale was located.
The father heard rumbling noises, and some scraping.. About a minute later the butcher came back.
\”About three pounds boneless\” He said.

Fun South African Fact: The waters surrounding the 2,500km long coastline are teeming with life. You’ll find great white sharks, African penguins, dolphins and much much more in South Africa’s oceans. Many travellers visit the coast to watch the annual whale migrations. In Hermanus, in the Western Cape, you can see hundreds of whales from June to late November. Simon’s Town, another coastal Western Cape town, is home to Boulder’s Beach. Here you can swim alongside colonies of African Penguins!
