The National Consumer Commission (NCC) invites the public and interested stakeholders to submit written comments on applications by the National Information Business Compliance Agency and the South African Franchisee Association for accreditation as Consumer Protection Groups. Both applications were published in the Gazette on 2 October 2026. Section 78 of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) empowers the NCC to accredit consumer protection groups.
The National Information Business Compliance Agency application outlines its role in protecting vulnerable consumers by promoting safe, ethical, and compliant trading practices, educating township and informal economy consumers on their rights under the CPA, and raising awareness regarding unsafe, counterfeit, or harmful goods, while expressly confirming that it does not conduct investigations, inspections, or enforcement activities.
The South African Franchisee Association’s application outlines its role in protecting and representing the consumer rights of franchisees, franchisee associations, councils, and forums across South Africa, promoting the spirit and purpose of the CPA, regulating relations between members and franchisors, assisting members in dispute resolution through conciliation, mediation, or arbitration, and intervening or acting on behalf of members in any matter or forum contemplated under the CPA.
Written comments must be submitted within 45 (forty-five) days from the date of publication. Interested parties can access both applications and the Gazette via the National Consumer Commission’s website https://thencc.org.za/consumer-groups/
Comments should be sent to: j.mbeje@thencc.org.za or t.kutumela@thencc.org.za.
