Proteas Women’s T20 World Cup Prep Moves To Durban

DURBAN: In preparation for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, the Proteas Women will convene for a national training camp from 25 – 30 August at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium in Durban.

Building on the week-long skills camp held in Tshwane earlier in the month, the team will intensify their efforts in KwaZulu-Natal, focusing on scenario training and intra-squad matches as they brace for the global event, set to begin on 03 October in the United Arab Emirates.

With the T20 spectacle under two months away, the six-day camp will largely feature a consistent group of internationally-capped players, as the national selection panel hones in on the final World Cup squad.

The camp will mark the return of experienced all-rounder Marizanne Kapp and captain Laura Wolvaardt, following their participation in The Hundred in England.

However, Chloé Tryon will miss the camp as she competes in the Caribbean Premier League, running from 22 – 29 August in Trinidad and Tobago.

On the injury front, World Sports Betting Western Province’s Delmi Tucker recently underwent successful surgery on her right shoulder after being diagnosed with rotator cuff tendinopathy, ruling her out for the remainder of 2024.

Fellow all-rounder Nadine de Klerk, meanwhile, will attend the camp to continue her rehabilitation from an Achilles injury.

Speaking ahead of the training camp, interim head coach Dillon du Preez commented:

“The outcome of the Durban camp will be crucial to help us ensure that we have the best possible squad ready for the World Cup. With the camp largely focusing on match scenarios, it will give us a final opportunity to assess all the players and to start finalising their roles.

“With the World Cup only five weeks away, this training camp becomes important for us just to make sure things start falling into place from a skills, team culture and conditioning perspective. We’re very close to finalising our World Cup squad and the camp will give us some time to assess the players, looking at form, fitness and overall readiness before we make a final decision.

“We also have Wolvaardt and Kapp back from The Hundred and will be joining us at the camp. Unfortunately, Delmi Tucker will miss out due to an operation on her shoulder and will only return early next year.”
