Dear Editor
The DA is deeply concerned by the recent reports of an alarming increase in snaring incidents within South Africa’s National Parks (SANParks), particularly the iconic Kruger National Park. The revelation that six elephants—a keystone species—have fallen victim to snares this year alone is a call for urgent action.
Snaring is a cruel and indiscriminate practice that not only causes immense suffering to the animals caught in these traps but also poses a significant threat to our biodiversity and conservation efforts.
The DA will be submitting a series of parliamentary questions to establish a clear understanding of the scope of this issue:
- The exact number of animals caught in snares within all SANParks areas.
- The species of animals that have been ensnared and the impact on their populations.
- The current measures in place to prevent snaring.
- The effectiveness of anti-poaching efforts and whether they need reinforcement.
- The suspected drivers of the uptick in snaring and whether this is linked to an increased demand for bushmeat.
Transparency is crucial in addressing this challenge – understanding the reasons behind this surge in poaching is essential to devising effective counter-strategies.
The DA calls on SANParks officials and the relevant governmental departments to work collaboratively in addressing this crisis. It is imperative to act swiftly to safeguard our natural heritage and ensure that the legacy of our national parks is preserved for future generations.
The DA will continue to monitor this situation closely and advocate for increased protection of our wildlife.
