GOOD Statement by Keagen Gertse, GOOD Drakenstein Councillor & Caucus Whip:
The GOOD Party in Drakenstein Municipality is disappointed, though not surprised, by the outcome of the internal investigation into DA Ward 7 Councillor Ruth Arnolds. GOOD lodged a formal complaint after Arnolds was documented violating the Public Amenities By-law.
Arnolds, accompanied by fellow DA members, was seen digging large holes in a public park in Van Wyksvlei to create makeshift fire pits for a community cooking event. While we acknowledged the well-meaning intention to feed the community, good intentions do not absolve a councillor from complying with municipal by-laws. Public representatives should lead by example, not flout the rules they are entrusted to uphold.
Despite clear evidence and a violation of municipal law, Arnolds received only a warning. This outcome is consistent with a broader pattern of double standards and selective accountability within the DA-led council. DA councillors, especially ward councillors, often avoid meaningful consequences for misconduct, while opposition councillors are swiftly subjected to disciplinary processes for far lesser infractions.
Consider the case of DA Ward 14 Councillor Brenda van Willingh in November 2024. Allegations included the dismissal of soup kitchen staff and the appointment of her daughter and a family friend, positions funded by ratepayers. Despite serious concerns, the DA majority found her not guilty and refused to initiate an independent investigation. Furthermore, it came to light that Speaker Koos Le Roux had prior knowledge of the allegations but chose to protect van Willingh rather than act in the public interest.
GOOD believes that at the heart of these issues is Speaker Koos Le Roux, whose office is meant to uphold accountability impartially. Despite his claims of independence, the facts tell a different story. His actions consistently favour the DA, whether by blocking investigations, suppressing evidence, or using the DA’s majority to stifle dissent.
The GOOD Party reiterates its call for fairness, transparency, and consistent application of the rules, regardless of political affiliation. The residents of Drakenstein deserve a council that governs with integrity, not double standards.
