GOOD Statement by Keagen Gertse, GOOD Drakenstein Councillor & Caucus Whip:
The nepotism claims reported in Paarl Post (04 Sept 2025), made by a Drakenstein municipal employee, are concerning but not surprising. GOOD raised similar concerns in June this year, when a whistleblower revealed irregularities in the hiring process for general worker posts in the Social Development Department.
Instead of investigating the allegations, the Municipality focused on identifying and silencing the whistleblower. This speaks to a toxic culture of secrecy and intimidation, typical of authoritarian governance.
Employment must be based on merit, not connections. GOOD believes those on the jobs database the longest, if they meet the requirements, should be prioritised. This would curb insider manipulation where well-connected individuals are tipped off to tailor their applications to upcoming vacancies.
This isn’t unique to Drakenstein. In Stellenbosch, a DA-run municipality, a senior HR official was caught on video discussing how to exclude white males from employment. Revealing a broader pattern of post manipulation where the DA governs.
GOOD cannot allow favouritism to thrive under a veneer of “good governance.”
If Drakenstein has nothing to hide, GOOD challenges the Municipality to publicly release its employee declarations of interest register.
Let the public decide whether the system is fair.
GOOD Core Values: The party emphasizes social justice, equality, and GOOD governance.
