Ezemvelo aim to end KZN teams’ drought of winning the Sasol League: Ezemvelo coach Nkosingiphile Maphumulo has set his heart on helping his team become the first from KZN to win the Sasol League National Playoffs.

Ezemvelo showed flashes of brilliance, albeit in patches, when they beat Eastern Cape’s Sophakama in the opening game of this year’s Sasol League National Playoffs at Knysna’s Lorie Stadium on a windy Tuesday morning. Eventually, player of the match Amanda Mkhize put Ezemvelo ahead in the 35th minute, before Londeka Simelane sealed the deal by scoring to make it 2-0… continue reading HERE.

UPL criminal investigation ‘still in progress’ three years after chemical spill in Durban: More than three years after thousands of tonnes of pesticides and other toxic chemicals polluted Durban rivers, the sea and the air in several residential areas, there is still no clear indication on when or whether Indian agrochemical giant UPL will face any criminal charges in court.

Responding to questions from Daily Maverick at a media briefing on October 15, national Environmental Affairs Deputy Minister Narend Singh indicated that the case was “still in progress”, but his department remained focused on rehabilitating the impacts of the 12 July 2021 chemical fire and spill in rivers adjoining the gutted UPL chemical warehouse in Cornubia, Durban…continue reading HERE.

KZN Cogta MEC welcomes arrest of Zulu prince in alleged R26m minerals theft ring: Cogta MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi, who is also the prime minister of the Zulu monarchy, applauded law enforcement agencies and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for dealing with the syndicate.

“We welcome this arrest as it sends a strong message crime is being dealt with seriously in KwaZulu-Natal. It is clear the police now have the upper hand against the [alleged] criminal syndicate of Prince Lungalomndeni, which has caused considerable harm to the economy of our province,” said Buthelezi.

Zulu, who was in the royal family faction that backed Prince Simakade’s claim to the Zulu throne against King Misuzulu, is among at least six suspects who have been charged with the theft of R26m worth of minerals belonging to RBM.

His alleged involvement…continue reading HERE.

Exploring Durban’s amazing biodiversity: These insightful words from Duncan Pritchard in the first episode of The Green Scene podcast highlight the importance of learning about our environment and why it matters.

Did you know that Durban is located within one of South Africa’s three globally recognised biodiversity hotspots, the Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany Hotspot?

With its rich variety of ecosystems, the city is home to an incredible range of plant and animal species—many of which are found nowhere else on Earth.

Yet, despite this natural wealth, Durban’s biodiversity faces increasing threats from climate change, invasive species, and urban expansion.

In The Green Scene – produced by East Coast Radio in partnership with Durban-based NPO Green Corridors – Andiswa Susan Dlamini, Duncan…continue reading HERE.

Transnet’s privatisation of Durban container port needs a do-over: It’s being contested by the losing bidder in court. The bigger issue is how to effectively restructure the entire Transnet monopoly.

The plan to hand over management of the Durban Container Terminal Pier 2 to Philippines-based International Container Terminal Services Incorporated (ICTSI) has hit its first snag.

The Durban High Court last week issued an interim interdict that prevents port owner Transnet from negotiating, concluding and implementing the contract with ICTSI, following a legal challenge by losing bidder APM Terminals, owned by Danish shipping company AP Moller-Maersk.

Given the potential for contracts of this nature to be contested, Transnet should have anticipated such a challenge.

APM says the award of the tender…continue reading HERE.

Former logistics manager jailed for multi-million rand fraud and corruption scheme: The Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court sentenced 46-year-old Rakesh Maharaj to eight years imprisonment for his role in a multi-million rand fraud and corruption scheme.

Maharaj, who was convicted on 103 counts of fraud, 102 counts of corruption, and one count of money laundering, had been employed as a logistics manager at Consulens Health Care Solution PTY between January 2015 and September 2017.

The court found that during his tenure, Maharaj colluded with accomplices to manipulate stock levels in the company’s system, creating false product demands to justify unnecessary stock purchases. This scheme involved the creation of fake invoices and delivery notes, resulting in fraudulent payments of R24 million to suppliers.

The case was… continue reading HERE.
