Intensified Efforts to Combat Rabies

In the News Today:  A leader in animal health, Boehringer Ingelheim, is stepping up its efforts to combat rabies in South Africa. In commemoration of World Rabies Day, the company is contributing to the ‘Zero by 30’ strategy, a worldwide goal to eliminate rabies by 2030. In response to the worst outbreak of rabies in the history of South Africa, Boehringer Ingelheim has embarked on enhanced vaccination strategies and has expanded its partnerships to protect both human and animal lives. 

Rabies remains a health concern in South Africa. Regions like KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo are some of the hotspots for rabies in the country. Even though rabies is preventable through vaccination, the disease continues to claim lives. Dogs, whether domesticated or wild, are the primary source of transmission.
