Ekurhuleni’s R0 Expropriation Implodes

The Ekurhuleni Metro’s attempt to expropriate private property for R0 has not merely failed – it backfired spectacularly.

This fiasco exposes the hidden ideological agenda driving expropriation without compensation (EWC) and serves as a national warning against reckless political experiments that undermine property rights and the Constitution.

For years the ruling party and certain opposition figures have peddled the myth that “nil rand” qualifies as compensation. It is economically unsustainable, constitutionally unjustifiable and morally unacceptable.

The implosion of the Ekurhuleni project demonstrates what happens when property rights are treated as an inconvenient detail, rather than the cornerstone of democracy.

The Metro sought to seize 34 hectares in Driefontein, valued at around R30 million, under the smokescreen of a housing programme – with no proper assessment, no environmental studies, no section 25 process, and no respect for the owner, the courts or the Constitution.

However, the Metro suddenly changed its tune after the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs rejected the project citing wetlands, groundwater instability, flood risks and the possible formation of sinkholes as reasons.

What was initially marketed as “strategic expropriation” has turned into an “environmental misunderstanding” overnight.

The truth is that Ekurhuleni knew all too well that it would lose the court case and be liable for millions in damages and legal costs.

The Freedom Front Plus maintains its stance that property rights are non-negotiable. They form the very foundation of economic growth, investor confidence, food security and personal freedom.

So, Ekurhuleni’s back-pedalling is not a victory for the administration, but for the Constitution and the rule of law.
