Electricity Is a Right, Not a Profit

GOOD Speech delivered during the George Municipality Council Meeting by Roxaan Vorster, GOOD George Municipality Councillor:

Speaker, one of the core functions of a municipality is to provide electricity to its residents.

The provision of electricity is a basic right, and it is therefore important to provide power that is affordable for all households, but specifically poor households and middle-income groups.

As the Good Party, we submitted a proposal at the previous Council meeting that the electricity increase, and the COS report be taken to the community. The DA coalition listened to Good’s proposal that it is important to follow the path of Public Participation.

In the item, we see that this was done, and the public provided input. George Municipality makes large profits from the sale of electricity. Little is spent on infrastructure maintenance.

Therefore, Good does not accept or support the electricity increase as mentioned.
