The ongoing water crisis in Ogies has reached a critical point, and the Emalahleni Local Municipality (Kriel, Ogies, Phola, eMalahleni) can no longer avoid providing clear answers.

Despite numerous complaints and pleas from residents, the situation keeps deteriorating and many households are being denied their constitutional right to a reliable supply of clean water.

Video evidence submitted as part of a formal complaint to the Municipal Manager, Mr Sizwe Mayisela, shows years of neglect, infrastructure decay and a poorly maintained distribution network.

The crisis stems from three main problems:

Infrastructure that is collapsing due to recurring technical failures, which can no longer be fixed with temporary patchwork; a municipality that is failing to fulfil its basic mandate to deliver services; and an enduring lack of long-term solutions, which leaves residents with nothing but short-term measures.

In addition, there is much uncertainty in the community about who is actually responsible for water supply and maintenance.

So, the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) demands that the Municipality provide clarity on who currently controls the water supply and infrastructure – whether the Emalahleni Municipality is supposed to shoulder the responsibility, or whether a service agreement exists with Seriti or any other external party – and what steps are being taken to repair the infrastructure.

It is crucial to provide a technical audit of Ogies’s water infrastructure, a clear timeline for repair work, and an official statement outlining the roles and accountability of the Municipality and any external role players, such as Seriti.

The Freedom Front Plus will keep an eye on the situation and will not hesitate to take further steps to protect the rights of Ogies residents.

Freedom Front Plus Political Position: It is a right-wing political party.
