During the latest council meeting of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging), the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) put a stop to the proposal by the Speaker, Sibongile Soxuza, to procure a new official vehicle for the struggling Municipality’s Mayor.
The party insisted that the item be referred back and that a service certificate for the current vehicle – a 2022 BMW X3 – be tabled to Council before any such decision is taken.
Besides, it is impractical and irresponsible to purchase a new official vehicle with the upcoming local government elections just around the corner.
The Speaker initially tried to push the proposal through with the help of the ANC and its coalition partners, prompting the Freedom Front Plus to walk out of the council chambers in protest.
Shortly after, Soxuza changed his position and agreed to request a service certificate, as proposed by the Freedom Front Plus.
This incident serves as further proof that the ANC is not fit to govern and will not think twice about looting a municipality, which is financially already on its knees, for unnecessary luxuries.
Emfuleni owes Eskom and Rand Water a whopping R6,7 billion, and struggles to pay salaries and service providers every month.
The Council should focus on these actual problems rather than on buying a new vehicle.
The Freedom Front Plus will not allow the Council to take uninformed and impractical decisions. The party will also keep pressing the Municipality to get its priorities in order while focusing on restoring service delivery and financial stability.
