Eskom appoints lead independent director

Eskom has appointed Leslie Mkhabela as its new Lead Independent Director to strengthen governance at the power utility.

Mkhabela initially joined Eskom as a non-executive board member in October 2022 – an appointment made by then, and late Public Enterprises Minister, Pravin Gordhan.

Eskom Board Chairperson, Mteto Nyati explained that Mkhabela will remain in the post for the rest of his term as a board member.

“In our quest to strengthen governance and leave behind an organisation with structures that have the necessary robust checks and balances, the Board deemed it necessary to appoint Mr Mkhabela as a Lead Independent Director. 

“We are happy that Mkhabela has accepted this important role, which he will occupy for the remainder of his term as an Eskom Board member. He has consistently demonstrated decisive, ethical, and inclusive leadership,” Nyati said.

According to Eskom website, Mkhabela boasts more than “24 years of experience practising as an attorney in South Africa”.

“He has provided advice on a variety of complex matters and transactions to the firm’s vast client base, which comprises public and private companies, industry regulators, high-net-worth individuals, and eminent persons. 

“Mkhabela has been recognised by Best Lawyers in the Dispute Resolution category. Leslie is an attorney with experience in regulated industries, providing legal opinions and general legal advice, litigation and arbitration in commercial disputes, judicial reviews, and constitutional and administrative law,” Eskom said.

Mkhabela’s appointment comes after the appointment of Dr Candice Hartley as Chief People Officer, and Rivoningo Mnisi as Group Executive: Renewables last month. – SAnews.gov.za

  2. A baby was born in South Africa. The village was very poor, and the makeshift hospital didn\’t have some necessary equipment.. such as scales.

    The father however, was desperate to know the newborn baby\’s weight. After quite a bit of asking around, the hospital\’s chairman came up with an idea.

    \”Five miles west, there\’s a butcher shop. The owner deals with meat, he should have a rather precise scale. You could just put your baby on the meat scale, and the weight reading you\’ll get should be pretty accurate.\”

    And so the father departed westward. After much walking, with his newborn child cardled safely in his arms, he finally arrived at the butcher shop. He explained his dilemma to the shop owner, to witch the latter replied:

    \”Don\’t worry, friend. It\’s not even a problem, I\’ll check it for you, free of charge.\” And so he took the child to the back, where the scale was located.

    The father heard rumbling noises, and some scraping.. About a minute later the butcher came back.

    \”About three pounds boneless\” He said.
