The post Fire at Blood River – maintaining positive relations with surrounding communities is of the utmost importance appeared first on Freedom Front Plus.

An apparent incident of arson at the Blood River site in northern KwaZulu-Natal shines the spotlight on how neighbouring communities regard one another’s heritage and how important it is to build positive relationships of mutual recognition.

The area is known for sporadic veld fires, particularly in late winter. According to a statement by the Heritage Foundation, though, oil was presumably set alight near the site manager’s house in this case.

A camper who helped to contain the fire was injured when burning oil landed on him.

The house was not damaged, but electrical infrastructure and part of the campsite were affected. The matter was reported to the Kingsley Police Station.

It is still too early to say with certainty that Blood River’s symbolism is the reason behind the incident. Over the years, Blood River and the Ncome site on the opposite side of the river have provided complementary perspectives on our shared history.

A relationship of mutual recognition and appreciation has been actively pursued.

Whether the surrounding communities share this mindset is another question. Against the backdrop of farm attacks and the issue of whether an Afrikaner genocide is developing, an incident of this nature at a highly symbolic site cannot be ignored.

The incident emphasises the need to openly discuss differences in identity and perspectives on history, rather than ignore them. That is the only way to cultivate a mutual appreciation for one another’s views.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) extends a helping hand to assist wherever needed.

Van der Merwe is approached by SANRAL one day who want to build a new highway through his donkey farm. Van is really concerned with how his donkeys can get from one side of the farm to the other without having to cross the highway and risk being injured or killed. He is promised that they will build bridges the highway so that his donkeys can cross under the highway. Van agrees and gives them the go-ahead.

The highway is built and a year later the same rep goes to the farm to go see how Van and his donkeys are. He eventually finds Van under one of these bridges chipping away at the roof of the tunnel with a hammer and chisel.

\”Mnr Van de Merwe, what are you doing damaging the highway bridge?\”
