In a presentation to Parliament yesterday, the Auditor-General (AG) once again singled out the Free State as one of the worst-performing provinces in the country regarding municipal governance and financial control.
Not a single Free State municipality managed to achieve a clean audit for the 2024/2025 financial year.
The ANC’s culture of laxity, complacency, and poor management has a direct impact on the daily lives of residents.
Free State residents have lost confidence in their municipalities due to years of poor service delivery and decaying infrastructure.
The AG also pointed out that leadership at the mayoral, council, and provincial levels remains ineffective. Meanwhile, infrastructure projects for roads, water, and sanitation are simply left incomplete.
The situation is particularly concerning in the Mangaung Metro, the Free State’s only metro and economic hub. The metro once again achieved just 50% of its service delivery targets. Furthermore, Mangaung spent R18,4 million on audit consultants with absolutely no improvement in its audit outcomes.
Report after report, warning after warning, and the visible decay of towns confirm that the ANC simply lacks the capacity or the political will to properly manage Free State municipalities.
It is time to vote the ANC out of Free State councils so that the process of turning municipalities around can begin, ensuring reliable service delivery to cities, towns, and communities once again.
