The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) notes with cautious optimism the launch of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to help address water problems in the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging).
The SPV is a new legal entity specifically established to manage the Municipality’s water-related services. Rand Water will hold 75% and Emfuleni 25% of the entity, which will be responsible for water supply, stormwater drainage and sewerage services in the region.
While the announcement reflects some political will from Rand Water and the Gauteng Provincial Government’s side, it simultaneously confirms the Freedom Front Plus’s warnings over many years that Emfuleni’s infrastructure has deteriorated to such an extent that external intervention has become not only desirable, but also inevitable.
Residents have endured years of persistent sewage spills, water outages, crumbling roads, environmental damage to the Vaal River and a complete absence of proper governance.
The Freedom Front Plus, the community and the media have repeatedly highlighted these issues — yet no sustainable action was taken. A lack of accountability has only deepened the crisis.
In the Freedom Front Plus’s view, the SPV is a positive step forward, but it has to deliver measurable results and amount to more than just a political announcement.
The party will fully exercise its oversight mandate to ensure the entity’s finances and processes are safeguarded against mismanagement and corruption.
There needs to be clear timelines, regular progress reports and transparent communication with the public. Maintenance and repair work must be sustainable and strategic — not opportunistic or election-driven.
The party will keep acting as watchdog, holding all role players accountable for what they have promised.
Emfuleni residents deserve reliable and efficient service delivery — not excuses, delays or political games.
