The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) welcomes the Ekurhuleni Metro Council’s decision to formally revoke the controversial Tariff A.2 basic charge. This levy imposed a fixed monthly electricity charge on households, pensioners and low-consumption users.
From the moment the tariff was introduced, the Freedom Front Plus warned that it was unaffordable, that public participation had been inadequate, and that it posed serious regulatory and financial risks.
These concerns were communicated in no uncertain terms to the Mayor, the Mayoral Committee Member for Finance and the Speaker.
Communities across the Metro were mobilised and attended public meetings in large numbers, submitted objections and signed petitions. The overwhelming pressure left the Council with no choice but to withdraw the tariff.
This decision confirms that transparent public participation and vigilant political oversight really do make a difference. This is not merely an administrative correction – it is the restoration of public confidence.
