The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) demands urgent action to address a growing water crisis in Bronkhorstspruit, which is being caused by the collapse of the local water treatment works.
A report compiled by a local resident and VF Plus activist, Ms Quintille de Vries, highlights not only the problems currently being experienced but also proposes practical solutions. (Report attached)
The root of the problem is identified as an infrastructure reliability issue caused by aging equipment and a lack of maintenance, rather than a shortage of raw water at the plant.
Currently, only one pump is operational, while half of the plant is out of order because filter sand has not been replenished since 15 May 2026.
Although the plant was designed to supply 54 million liters of clean water per day to Bronkhorstspruit, Zithobeni, Ekangala, Rethabisengand surrounding communities, it is currently producing significantly less. As a result, higher-lying areas frequently experience low water pressure or completely dry taps.
According to the report, the fastest and most cost-effective way to improve water supply reliability in Bronkhorstspruit is to replenish the missing filter sand, refurbish the aging raw water pump, install a second raw water pump for backup purposes, keep critical spare parts on-site, and implement preventative maintenance.
These interventions are far cheaper than building a new treatment plant and will immediately secure water availability for residents, businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities.
The collapse of this water plant is yet another clear indication of how the current ActionSA/ANC-led coalition government is failing the residents of Bronkhorstspruit.
On 4 November 2026, the residents of Bronkhorstspruit will have the opportunity to vote for the VF Plus to establish an accountable government that will treat this crisis as a top priority.
