The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) is deeply concerned about the persistent increase in gender-based violence and rape in Mpumalanga, and demands urgent action from the relevant authorities.
Mpumalanga’s residents – particularly women and children – live in constant fear due to the high incidence of sexual crimes and violence. The most recent crime statistics, along with reports from private organisations, reveal a shocking reality: gender-based violence is on the rise, while law enforcement agencies’ response falls short.
This is not only a moral crisis, but also a gross violation of human rights. It is unacceptable that victims continue to suffer in silence, often without access to protection, counselling or justice.
On 28 May 2025, a missing 17-year-old girl was found murdered in a locked shack in Kinross.
According to the police report, the victim had been missing since 23 May 2025. Her mutilated body was discovered in a shack allegedly belonging to her stepfather.
In January 2025, a 39-year-old man was arrested on multiple charges of abducting and raping minor girls aged between 7 and 13 in Emalahleni. The suspect allegedly sent children to a shop to separate them from others, then abducted and raped them.
He is linked to at least ten cases of rape and abduction in Emalahleni, Vosman and Mhluzi during 2023 and 2024.
These incidents highlight the urgent need for more stringent measures against gender-based violence in Mpumalanga.
The Freedom Front Plus believes there is no room for political failure or indifference when it comes to protecting the vulnerable.
The provincial government, in collaboration with the Departments of Community Safety and Social Development as well as the provincial police service, should implement practical, coordinated and sustainable measures to combat this type of crime.
The party calls on the Mpumalanga Legislature to fulfil its collective responsibility by:
- immediately reviewing prevention campaigns for gender-based violence and protection services,
- improving policing and investigative capacities in rape cases, and
- supporting victims through access to trauma support and legal assistance.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep combating gender-based violence in all its forms, and holding the government accountable when it fails to protect women and children.
