The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) today requested the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) to urgently intervene at Amandasig Secondary School in Pretoria North, where serious traffic problems are jeopardising the safety of more than a thousand schoolchildren.
The Freedom Front Plus visited the school on Thursday to witness the chaos that erupts once the school bell rings first-hand.
One of the major contributing factors is the fact that Amandasig Secondary School and the adjacent Railway Secondary School share the same gate on Brits Road.
Dozens of cars, taxis and buses wait there to pick up children, but due to limited parking, vehicles park on the shoulder of the road or even in one of the two traffic lanes.
This dangerous situation has already caused an accident in which a child was hit by a car and injured last year.
Parents approached the Freedom Front Plus and expressed their concerns, demanding that traffic signs be put up and that the TMPD immediately intervene to regulate traffic and ensure the children’s safety.
Brits Road is an important link between Pretoria, Rosslyn and Brits and carries a large volume of traffic, including trucks. This increases the risk to schoolchildren even more.
The Freedom Front Plus has already sent a letter to the TMPD and Gauteng’s traffic safety division requesting intervention.
The party will closely monitor the situation while pressuring the TMPD.
The Freedom Front Plus will, furthermore, submit proposals to Gauteng’s Department of Roads and Transport to not only regulate traffic, but also install a traffic light at the relevant intersection.
