Don’t Sell the Good Hope Centre in Cape Town

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) is concerned about the confusion and obscurity surrounding the proposed sale of the Good Hope Centre, a historic and iconic landmark in Cape Town, as well as the conflicting messages appearing in the media.

The party is of the view that the City of Cape Town should not sell the Good Hope Centre, but should rather develop the site itself.

The party’s proposal is that comprehensive research and public participation should take place to determine the most suitable and optimal use of the property.

During a recent radio interview, Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis announced that the highest bid for the property was made by a Nigerian church at R135 million.

According to the Mayor, however, an investigation by the City found that the bidder did not have the funds needed to conclude the transaction. Consequently, the City accepted the second-highest offer of R130 million.

Hill-Lewis added that the prospective buyer intends to convert the Good Hope Centre into a mosque, which will also include low-cost housing.

Shortly after this announcement, the original highest bidder publicly denounced the City’s claim and maintained that it does indeed have sufficient funding to make the purchase.

This contradictory information has created significant uncertainty and public confusion about the future of this important landmark.

Given the serious housing crisis currently faced by Cape Town, the City has a responsibility to develop the Centre in such a way that it serves the broader public interest and benefits all residents.

Converting the property into a religious institution – whether a church, mosque or any other place of worship – will primarily benefit only a specific group and not the entire community.

The Freedom Front Plus urges the City of Cape Town to immediately halt the current sale process, ensure transparency by disclosing all bids and findings of the due diligence investigation, and to prioritise public interest when making decisions regarding the future of the Good Hope Centre.
