The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) requested the Executive Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM), Babalwa Lobishe, to launch a thorough investigation into the series of fires plaguing the Metro over the past two months.
Although hot and dry summer conditions increase the risk of veld and bush fires, the nature and timing of several incidents have raised serious concern. At least one suspected arsonist has already been arrested.
The fires caused substantial damage to, among other things, the power substation in Summerstrand and led to the closure of sections of the N2 following a multi-vehicle accident caused by poor visibility.
These incidents have left communities feeling uncertain, while putting firefighting and emergency services under extreme pressure.
The Freedom Front Plus insists that fire and rescue services, law enforcement and forensic experts work together to determine whether the fires were deliberately started so that those responsible can be brought to book.
Clarifying the causes of the fires is essential to restore public confidence and reduce future risks.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep the pressure on to ensure residents’ safety is top priority, and that the Metro’s actions are proactive and transparent.
