From Hillcrest to London: The Barista Who Turned Coffee Into Connection

At the Starbucks Hillcrest store, the regulars have started bringing their families in. They want them to meet Musawenkosi Mosikili, the barista behind the counter who has just been named Starbucks South Africa’s 2026 National Champion. The store has only been open a year. You would not know it from the way people talk about it.

Mosikili won the title at the National Final at the Starbucks Reserve in Melrose Arch, held from 10 to 12 June. In September he travels to the Starbucks EMEA Support Centre in Chiswick, London. The EMEA Championship runs from 16 to 18 September. He joins the other finalists from the 11th. There is a stop in Amsterdam from 13 to 15 September to visit the Starbucks EMEA Coffee Roasting Plant and learn more about the company’s approach to ethical sourcing.

For a young man who joined Starbucks in 2023, unsure of himself and still finding his voice in English, it is a long way to have come in a short time.

Ask him about the win and he does not talk about trophies. He talks about people. “Some of the best moments we get to experience in life are when we feel seen, heard and inspired,” he says. “Through each cup I craft, I have a moment of connection.” That, more than anything, is what the championship gave him. A bigger stage for something he was already doing every morning.

His winning drink says the same thing in a cup. He built the Caramel Comfort Cold Brew as a portrait of his mother. It opens with a pump of chocolate sauce poured on top, two swirls of caramel drizzle down the inside of the cup, and the signature cold brew. To him, that base holds his mother’s strength and the solid footing she gave him. He fills the ice to the third line. That is the Starbucks house measure, there to steady the temperature and stop the drink from watering down. To him, that line is her too, the one who keeps the family grounded when things around them turn to chaos.

The finish is a velvety oat milk cold foam lifted with two pumps of white chocolate. It settles over the bold coffee like a sweet blanket, which is how he describes her gentle care. “This beverage is basically a picture of my mom,” he says. “I can’t wait to show the whole world the inspiration behind this South African Champion.”

He carries the same warmth to his guests. He is always nudging them toward reusable cups, and he means it.

There is a phrase he keeps coming back to. In his culture, he says, it takes a village to raise a child. His village showed up for him. Mentors, fellow partners, two of South Africa’s own EMEA title winners. Teddy Nzama and Phuti Mmotla coach in the local market and remind the baristas that dreams delayed are not dreams denied. Kabelo Jori, last year’s National Champion, is part of that same circle, still close enough to the title to know exactly what Musa is walking into. Ishan Natalie rounds out the group, the coach they call Mr Miyagi, guiding the team through the run-up to London. Now he gets to carry that village with him to London. “Carrying the flag for South Africa and representing the spirit of Ubuntu is a profound milestone for me,” he says.

He never expected any of it. “I have always wanted to share my story with the world,” he says. “I just did not think it would be so soon.”

We asked Musa a few questions. This is what he shared.

Sustainability is a big part of Starbucks. What do you think about it as a Champion? “Starbucks and its ethical sourcing, quality practices and sustainability mission are inspiring. The impact within the first ten feet of the coffee supply chain, the farmers, the farm workers and the millers, is like no other. As the last ten feet, it brings me joy to know that our farmers, our coffee communities and everyone who plays a part are well taken care of. I always encourage our guests to use our reusable cups. It helps the planet by cutting down on waste, saving trees and lowering pollution.”

What advice would you give other partners who want to grow their craft? “This journey has proved to me that nothing is truly impossible. What feels daunting at first simply needs time and familiarity to master. To every partner who wants to grow and inspire others, I ask three questions. Why not? Why not you? Why not now?”

How has this shaped how you see your future at Starbucks? “Starbucks gave me a chance when most people had lost hope in me. When I faced financial issues while trying to get to university, I thought my life was over. Little did I know that Starbucks had completely different plans for me. By the looks of things I will be doing what I am passionate about, crafting and leading, for many more years to come.”

Tell us something we don’t know about you? “Most partners think I am talkative and open, even outside of work. What they do not know is that it is only around them that I get a real sense of joy. Outside of work, I can be shy in certain situations. But at Starbucks I feel seen, valued and inspired, and that lets me discover new things about myself.”

\’Brave\’ is one of those words that has been bleached of most of its meaning these days, thanks to far too many appearances in the glaring light of ad slogans and corporate Public Relations. I never thought about anything as brave anymore; it just seemed like a flabby, glib cliche. – Susan Orlean
