Garsies Pull Off a Late Smash-and-Grab Win

The much-anticipated encounter between Hoërskool Monument (Monnas) and Hoërskool Garsfontein (Garsies) had all the makings of a memorable battle, and it certainly lived up to expectations. Under the highveld sun in Krugersdorp, the stage was set for a fiercely contested derby, and the players delivered a spectacle that will be remembered for years to come.

From the outset, it was clear that Garsfontein came to play. Dominating possession and territory, the visitors applied relentless pressure on the hosts. Their early efforts paid off when their dynamic flanker, Stephan Pretorius, broke through the Monnas defense with a powerful run to score the first try of the match. Fullback Handré Maree calmly added the conversion, giving Garsies an early 7-0 lead.

Garsfontein’s momentum didn’t falter as they extended their lead with a brilliantly orchestrated team try. A brilliant piece of play from Hanno Du Toit, who stepped inside and offloaded to his half-back partner Evan Bernhardi, saw Bernhardi finish off a superb try. The second half began with both teams locked in a defensive battle, neither side able to break through. It wasn’t until 20 minutes into the half that the game sparked back into life. A quick tap from Evan Bernhardi caught the Garsies’ defense off guard, and he found Schooney in support, who dived over in the corner. Schooney’s superb touchline conversion brought Monnas to within three points, 21-24.

With just minutes remaining, Monument’s replacement right winger seized a moment of brilliance. Reading a wide pass from Garsfontein, he intercepted the ball and sprinted the length of the field to score. For the first time in the match, Monnas took the lead, 28-24, after Schooney’s successful conversion.

But the drama was far from over. In a heart-stopping final play, Garsfontein’s backs and forwards combined flawlessly, moving the ball with precision until it reached left winger Junaide Stuart. Stuart broke through to score, breaking the hearts of the Monnas supporters. Maree’s conversion sealed the deal, and Garsfontein snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

As the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read 31-28 in favor of the visitors. It was a match that showcased the resilience, skill, and passion of schoolboy rugby, leaving the crowd at Ras Van Rooyen in awe.
