GBV Stats Cover-up

23 June 2025 by Guest

Dear Editor

The Democratic Alliance (DA) will write to the Chairperson of the Police Portfolio Committee to request that the Minister of Police urgently appear before the Committee to explain why senior SAPS officials misled Parliament about the omission of gender-based violence (GBV) statistics in the latest national crime report.

This is not a technical error, it is a deliberate misrepresentation that demands accountability.

For the second time, the SAPS leadership has falsely claimed that the 23 May 2025 crime statistics report included detailed data on murders, attempted murders, and assaults against women and children. During the Committee meeting on 11 June, Deputy National Commissioner Mosikili insisted that this data was included. It was not.

Shockingly, National Commissioner Fannie Masemola repeated the same falsehood on 20 June, contradicting himself mid-session and ultimately doubling down on an untruth. The fact remains: SAPS failed to report any data specifically relating to women and children in its latest crime stats.

Parliament cannot exercise oversight if it is fed misinformation. The DA will insist that the Minister account for why SAPS misled Parliament and what action will be taken. Misleading Parliament is a serious offence and someone must be held responsible.

If SAPS claims that GBV is a national priority, then its failure to report key data transparently tells a different story. You cannot fight what you refuse to measure.

Women and children in South Africa deserve more than platitudes. They deserve facts, integrity, and a police service that takes their safety seriously.

Regards

Lisa Schickerling MP
DA Deputy Spokesperson on Police
