GOOD Statement by Siyabulela Mamkeli, >GOOD City of Cape Town Councillor:

The GOOD Party is appalled by the inhumane and unsanitary conditions witnessed at Heideveld Hospital. A symptom of a public healthcare system that is broken, underfunded, and in desperate need of urgent intervention.

GOOD has seen deeply disturbing footage of a young patient being placed in what appears to be a hospital storeroom, surrounded by rubbish, discarded medical waste, and empty boxes. The room, which reportedly doubles as a space to rinse bedpans, is clearly not fit for human care. It has been alleged that even the clothing of deceased patients is stored there, and that stray cats roam the facility freely, posing serious health risks to vulnerable patients.

While the family acknowledges that the patient received medication and attention from a doctor, the overall environment paints a grim picture of systemic collapse. The delay in providing a proper bed, only secured upon the grandmother’s insistence, further highlights the critical shortage of resources and infrastructure. Meanwhile, it is alleged that another child, reportedly hit by a car, was left sitting in a chair for hours before being assisted.

These conditions are not just appalling; they are dangerous and degrading. No one should be subjected to this kind of neglect in a public facility, least of all children. The right to health is enshrined in our Constitution, yet incidents like this show how far we are from realising equality.

The conditions at Heideveld Hospital are not an isolated incident; they are tragically symptomatic of a broader healthcare system that is in crisis. GOOD calls on the Western Cape Health Department to urgently investigate the conditions at Heideveld Hospital, and to ensure accountability and immediate improvements. This must be a wake-up call, not just for Heideveld, but for the state of healthcare across the province.

South Africans deserve dignity and quality care, not storerooms and stray animals.
