Government strengthens efforts to end violence against women

Government strengthens efforts to end violence against women

President Cyril Ramaphosa says government remains committed to working across society to end violence perpetrated against women in the country.

Delivering his State of the Nation Adress (SONA) in Cape Town on Thursday evening, President Ramaphosa highlighted that, as part of these efforts, 65 Thuthuzela Care Centres have been established nationwide, providing critical services to survivors.

Of the country’s 52 districts, 44 have established gender-based violence (GBV) shelters, offering a safe haven for women in need.

“All police stations in the country have victim friendly services, and another 16 sexual offences courts will be established in the next financial year. We continue to work across society to end the violence that is perpetrated against women.

“We have promulgated the National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Act, establishing a national structure to oversee a coordinated response to this crisis. We will ensure that the Council is fully functional and properly resourced,” President Ramaphosa said.
