GOOD Statement by Brett Herron, GOOD Secretary-General:
The TikTok video, circulating on social media, making offensive and racially charged remarks about South Africa’s Coloured community is not only egregious, it is deeply offensive and should be condemned in the strongest terms. But it also reveals a painful truth that, three decades into our democracy, South Africa remains a society divided along racial and ethnic lines.
These divisions are no accident. They have been cynically fuelled by political leaders who, lacking compelling ideas to fix the country, instead exploit our differences for political gain.
We are witnessing a dangerous pattern, politicians fanning the flames of racial hatred to distract from their own failures. This behaviour sets a toxic precedent, not just between races and communities, but in eroding the very foundations of human dignity and constitutional rights.
Political parties that organise around race are perpetuating a culture of intolerance and violence. They must be held accountable for the consequences of their words and actions.
