Inaugural Hyundai Hockey Awards

2 September 2025 by Guest

As the 2025 school hockey season reaches an electrifying finale, Hyundai Automotive South Africa is proud to announce the launch of the inaugural Hyundai Hockey Awards, a celebration of the rising stars, coaches and unforgettable moments that defined this year’s season.

This exciting new initiative builds on Hyundai Automotive South Africa’s sponsorship of DStv Channel 216, the dedicated school hockey broadcast platform launched earlier this season. The Channel, in partnership with SuperSport Schools, has brought live, high-quality coverage of school hockey across South Africa to viewers.

“At Hyundai Automotive South Africa we believe in driving possibilities not just on the road, but in the lives of young and talented hockey players,” said Tshiamo Tladi, Marketing Director at Hyundai Automotive South Africa.

“Partnering with SuperSport Schools allows us to support and spotlight the next generation of hockey stars. These awards are just the beginning of a long-term journey to celebrate talent and dedication in youth sport.”

SuperSport Schools, a platform dedicated to broadcasting and developing school sports across Southern Africa, echoed the importance of nurturing young talent.

“The Hyundai Hockey Awards are the first of their kind in South Africa. They are more than just a celebration of talent but shine the spotlight on the players and coaches who make this sport so special. These young stars are shaping the future of hockey and it is our desire to see some of them participating at international stages in the near future,” said Thando Bakumeni, General Manager at SuperSport Schools.

Do not miss the inaugural Hyundai Hockey Awards on Wednesday, 3 September 2025 at 19:00 on Channel 216 on DStv as well as on SABC Plus.

The roundarm action used for throwing the ball was used prior to the overarm throw used today. Prior to its conception, the underarm throw was used. The roundarm throw was conceived by English cricketer Tom Walker during the 1790s. Some insiders credit a woman, Christiana Willes to have devised the roundarm style. Wearing the bulky dresses of her time, Willes found the underarm throw difficult and inaccurate and decided to change it.
