Durban: Artificial intelligence has become one of the most discussed business tools in South African workplaces, with companies rapidly adopting platforms like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot in the hope of improving productivity, reducing workload, and accelerating decision-making.

However, according to College Africa Group (CAG), the real problem is not that AI is failing — it is that many businesses are using it incorrectly.

“Most organisations expected AI to replace work. Instead, they are discovering that AI still requires strong human judgment, business context, and clear accountability,” says Arnold Muscat, Director of College Africa Group.

“AI produces language — not truth. It can generate confident answers very quickly, but if employees accept outputs without validation, the risk becomes greater than the benefit.”

The Real Issue Is Not Technology — It Is Governance

In many organisations:

  • Employees are already using AI tools daily
  • There are no formal usage policies
  • Sensitive business information is entered without control
  • AI outputs are trusted without verification
  • Managers assume automation means accuracy

This creates significant business risks including:

  • Incorrect financial reporting
  • Poor decision-making
  • Data exposure and compliance concerns
  • HR documentation errors
  • Loss of accountability across teams

CAG explains that the success of AI depends less on the software itself and more on how employees are trained to use it.

Why AI Often Fails to Deliver Results

Many businesses approach AI as a shortcut rather than a support tool.

They expect immediate productivity gains without investing in:

  • staff awareness
  • practical prompting skills
  • validation processes
  • Microsoft Excel competence
  • reporting and analytical thinking

Without these foundations, AI becomes a risk multiplier instead of a productivity tool.

“The companies getting ahead are not the ones using AI the most — they are the ones using it properly,” says Muscat.

Practical AI Training for Responsible Business Use

College Africa Group provides corporate training across South Africa focused on:

  • AI in the Workplace
