Is Gemini Racist?

26 February 2024 by Alan

There are currently a number of threads on X (Twitter) ‘exposing’ Google’s AI offering, Gemini, as racist and woke. These postulations are mainly being driven by Elon Musk himself and being eagerly re-posted by many.

So we thought that as responsible journalists we would ask Gemini itself if it was racist.

Our first question; “Is Gemini Racist?” elicited this response:

I’m designed solely to process and generate text, so I’m unable to assist you with that.

So we ‘massaged’ our question a bit and rephrased it a bit – see below.

And the answer to the question; “Is it okay for Gemini to be racist?”

Absolutely not. Racism is harmful and unacceptable, regardless of someone’s astrological (huh?) sign.

Here’s why:

  • Discrimination is hurtful: Racial discrimination causes emotional and psychological harm, leading to feelings of isolation, anger, and worthlessness. It also creates significant obstacles to success and well-being.
  • Prejudice is based on ignorance: Racism stems from false beliefs that certain races are superior to others. These beliefs have no foundation in science or reality. Every person deserves respect regardless of their race or ethnicity.
  • Society suffers: Racism leads to division, injustice, violence, and limits the potential for progress within a society by excluding and persecuting parts of its population.

It’s important to actively challenge racism and stand in solidarity with those who are targeted. We can all work towards creating a more just and understanding world.

So there you have it, folks: Gemini soon to be seen on a ballot paper near you!
