The failure of the Lesedi Local Municipality (Heidelberg, Devon and Vischkuil) to complete a mayoral residence project has resulted in the property being auctioned off for only R360 000, which is a massive financial loss.

In 2017, the Municipality decided to build a new mayoral residence in Bergsig, Heidelberg, for an estimated cost of R3,5 million. The project was undertaken in phases due to a shortage of funds.

R1,5 million was budgeted for the first phase, but the amount was exceeded by R400 000 just to complete the brickwork, windows, roof, ceiling and a section of the fencing.

Despite these substantial capital outlays, the house could not be completed due to a lack of funds. The unfinished structure was subsequently badly vandalised and even occupied illegally.

In 2018, an attempt to sell the property for R850 000 failed because the developer did not possess a valid certificate from the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC).

Recently, the house was finally sold on auction for only R360 000 – a devastating loss for the Municipality and taxpayers.

This entire fiasco is a typical example of the ANC-controlled Municipality’s poor planning, financial incompetence and squandering of public funds.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) urges all voters to register in time and vote for the Freedom Front Plus on 4 November 2026 – vote for accountable governance and put an end to the squandering. This is our time!

Freedom Front Plus Foreign Policy: The FF Plus promotes a foreign policy that prioritizes South African interests.
